Late in the summer of 2002 T:16 was released upon an unsuspecting
fan bass. After years doing all the recording themselves, the boys decided it was time to tie down some of their work in a
more finished form. Recorded in record time the album T:16 was made below sea
level in 6 days on a diet of 36 bottles of pop. The band were warned that
this couldn't be done, so they went ahead and did it anyway, and did
it very well I might add. In the time it takes any other band to tune up,
3lb BASS recorded Ten songs for the album, and then added another called
DAGA which you could learn to play for yourself.
They also sold all the copies that they made, did some gigs and
possibly made a profit.
As soon as the wailing siren like guitar of 2 SUGARS explode and the
diamond edged rift begins its clear that this album is a call to arms, and
a call to drink tea. The nature of the recording seems to give an added
urgency and edge to the industrial rock of SET ME FREE and the madness and
vitriol of ONE TO ONE. In contrast GIRL IN A BOX II and 7:21 have a sepia
tinged sound which emphasizes their delicate melancholy beauty, without
breaking their sense of hope. The backwards guitar yearning of DEEP and Matt's
harmonies on JIMMY STEWART continue this.
FISCIANT grows and swirls out of an atmospheric embryo, before
exploding into a primary colored cacophony of much anger and much beauty,
before fading out again into washes of harmonics. Many of these tracks
have become staple favorites in 3lb BASS' live shows, especially the epic
LIE TO ME and the mighty LENINGRAD PIER, which Major Ken recently rated
the greatest song in the world ever...and for once he might just be right.
