SARDEALS |
||
| Its
not known by many, but as well as being Britain's largest port without a harbor,
medieval Deal was also the 3rd largest producer of Sardines in the world (behind
Sardinia and Rhodesia).
These 'Sardeals' were caught in nets off Sandown Castle by men who worked in rival gangs. Gang names included:
The Liverwort Boys: lead by Concrete Colin OPEC (Only Pilchards Eat Crabs): lead by Josh Wink and The Kaiser Chiefs: Lead by my Matt's Gran.
The great nets of Sardeals were taken back to North Deal in huge boats known as 'The Nemesis', 'The Ark' and 'Farrier Street' (These last two vessels had Streets in Deal named after them).
They were taken to the Sardeals tinning factory which stood in Kings Street where 'The Edge'* is today. The Sardeals factory shouldnt be confused with the 'Sprat Factory' which was run by Rodgers ancestors in the very place where Mat and Cam now live.
*Known for his love of anything fishy this shop is named after the day The Edge from U2 came to town, on New Years Day One October. He wanted to see where Deals great industry of the past was centered and commented that 'It gives me great Pride to Stay in Deal for the First Time. I feel like a Stranger in a Strange Land, but its been A Beautiful Day and Even better than the real thing. I feel So Cruel and a bit Bad having to leave after only 40 Seconds, But its Eleven O'clock, and I would Rejoice to see the Promenade, and set a BASS TRAP."
